23rd Annual Japanese Speech Contest for Foreigners A Call for Contestants

In order to better understand how Japan (Yamaguchi) is seen from the perspective of a non-native and to help spread information about various countries to the people of Yamaguchi, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Chapter of the United Nations Association of Japan is hosting the 23rd Annual Japanese Speech Contest for Foreigners. In addition, this speech contest will help in the development of those who wish to work to spread internationalization and international cooperation, to create a sense of mutual understanding between the people of the prefecture and residents from abroad and to serve as a ground for international exchange.
Contestants will draw on their observations and thoughts from the work place,classroom or daily life as residents within the prefecture to answer the question of how their own country differs from/similar to Japan (Yamaguchi) in regards to culture, values and practices. Using this material, they will share their opinions and experiences within a speech written in Japanese.

Date and Time: November 17, 2012 (Sat) 14:00 to 16:00
Place: Old Prefectural Assembly Building (1-1, Takimachi, Yamaguchi City)
Requirements: Must be 18 years of age or older, be a foreign resident in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and not have lived in Japan for more than 5 years
Speech Requirements
Theme: “My Country: How My Country is Different but Surprisingly Similar to Japan!” (sub-topics may be chosen freely)
Time Limit: Less than six minutes, use of manuscript paper optional (but subject to markdown)
Rubric: Content- 60 points, Expressions- 40 points, out of a possible 100 points
Prizes
First Place: Certificate, Plaque and 30,000Yen
Second Place: Certificate, Plaque and 20,000 Yen
Honorable Mention: (number of recipients to be decided later) certificate and 5,000Yen
All Participants: Speech Contest Memento
Application: Send in a written copy of the Japanese speech, around 1,000 characters, and include titles of any sub-topics, address, name, age, citizenship, job (school name and year), and phone number by fax or by email.
Deadline: October 18, 2012 (Thur)
Contestants: The Yamaguchi Prefectural Chapter of the United Nations Association of Japan will select 10 contestants from applicants. The results will be sent to all applicants by October 26, 2012 (Thur). Travel expenses can be compensated.
