			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In order to better understand how Japan (Yamaguchi) is seen from the perspective of a non-native and to help spread information about various countries to the people of Yamaguchi, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Chapter of the United Nations Association of Japan is hosting the 21<sup>st</sup> Annual Japanese Speech Contest for Foreigners. In addition, this speech contest will help in the development of those who wish to work to spread internationalization and international cooperation, to create a sense of mutual understanding between the people of the prefecture and residents from abroad and to serve as a ground for international exchange.  </p>
<p>Contestants will draw on their observations and thoughts from the workplace, classroom or daily life as residents within the prefecture to answer the question of how their own country differs from Japan (Yamaguchi) in regards to culture, values and practices. Using this material, they will share their opinions and experiences within a speech written in Japanese.</p>

<p><strong>Date and Time: November 13, 2010 (Sat) 13:00 to 16:00</strong></p>
<p><strong>Place: Caliente Yamaguchi (5-1-1, Yuda Onsen, Yamaguchi City)</strong></p>
<p>Requirements: Must be 18 years of age or older, be a foreign resident in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and not have lived in Japan for more than 5 years</p>
<p><strong>Speech Requirements </strong></p>
<p>Theme: “Having Pride in My Country: How My Country Differs from Japan” (sub-topics may be chosen freely)</p>
<p>Time Limit: Less than six minutes, use of manuscript paper<em> </em>optional</p>
<p>Rubric: Content- 60 points, Expressions- 40 points, out of a possible 100 points</p>
<p>Prizes</p>
<p>First Place: Plaque and 30,000 yen</p>
<p>Second Place: Plaque and 20,000 yen</p>
<p>Honorable Mention: (number of recipients to be decided later) certificate and 5,000 yen</p>
<p>All Participants: Speech Contest Memento</p>

<p>Application: Send in a written copy of the speech, around 1000 characters, and include titles of any sub-topics, address, name, age, citizenship, job (school name and year), and phone number by fax or by email.</p>
<p><strong>Deadline: October 21, 2010 (Thurs.)</strong></p>
<p>Contestants:</p>
<p>The Yamaguchi Prefectural Chapter of the United Nations Association of Japan will select 10 contestants from the applicants. The results will be sent to all applicants on October 28, 2010 (Thurs.). Travel expenses can be compensated.</p>
